BREWER HIGH SCHOOL (BHS)

Mentor Teacher: Lori Spruce

At BHS I spent time teaching Photography, Graphic Design, Art 1, and AP/Advanced classes. I most heavily focused on Art 1 and Graphic Design class--writing and teaching mini lessons for Art 1, and a unit for Graphic Design. I also made several mini lessons for the Photography classes. I migrated around the room with the AP/Advanced students, checking-in helping them find materials and introduce some new mediums (like watercolor). AP students have to create a 24 piece portfolio and since I was an AP art student once I was able to sit down and work on helping students make a list of the works they have and they works they need, as well as begin to flesh out some concentration ideas.

I learned that many adolescents struggle with finding intrinsic motivation, and are extremely uncertain about taking risks in art. This is understandable and perhaps normal for their age as they are still trying to decipher what the social "norms" are and who they are in relation to that. I consistently tried to help students gain some confidence in their art making abilities by referring to their progress, as well as normalizing the fact that we are all working on something, meaning that we all have strengths and weaknesses.
